Social Services

Our options are not limited to the internships listed below. Organizations listed reflect sites where WCSC has recently placed students or those that are currently looking for interns.  Please feel free to do your own research and do not hesitate to contact WCSC for further opportunities.

  • Opportunities marked with a ✠are especially suited for Social Work majors completing their Senior Social Work Practicums.

Women, Children & Youth

  • ✠– focuses on sustainable communities and support families through career trainings, youth development programs, and partnerships for economic development and social enterprise.
  • ✠– provides an array of programing for low-income youth, supporting their transition to adulthood and working to meet their social, academic, and career needs.
    • – An intervention program for disengaged youth facing obstacles that prevent them from accessing resources and achieving goals in education, employment, and healthy living.
    • Interns shadow professional counselors, write case notes, and help youth find resources in the community.
  • ✠– provides healthcare, English classes, and other support services for women and children.
  • – promotes awareness and action on social justice issues in the community, particularly surrounding racism and violence against women.
  • – community drop-in center that provides resources to expectant parents and families with young children, including ESL instruction, parenting classes, and support groups for victims of domestic violence.
  • – Domestic violence shelter and support hotline. Provides clinical counseling, case management, and comprehensive services to empower survivors to recover and thrive.

Persons with Disabilities

  • – an inter-denominational Christian community centered around communal living with members who have intellectual disabilities.
  • – provides opportunities and support for adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

Refugees & Immigrants

  • ✠– case management and employment support services to refugees and those with asylum status in DC.
  • – supports refugees in countries uprooted by conflict or natural disasters.  
  • ✠– helps torture survivors engage with social, psychological, and legal services as well as advocacy and outreach.
    • Past interns have supported torture survivors with asylum cases, accompanied them to court hearings, attended group sessions, and provided one-on-one support.
  • – resource center for African Refugees and Immigrants supporting economic and social prosperity.
  • ✠– supports immigrant communities in the DC region through social and legal services in a variety of arenas, including children and youth services, domestic violence, human trafficking, and immigration law.

Homelessness

  • – provides shelter and social services for women experiencing homelessness.
  • ✠ â€“ provides services for men experiencing homelessness and features a running therapy program.

HIV/AIDS Resource Centers

  • ✠– offers support to low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS.
  • ✠– HIV resource center for women that provides HIV prevention services and care management, as well as policy and advocacy support.

Additional Services

  • ✠– works with individuals involved in the criminal justice system from the point of arrest and pretrial status through reentry into the community upon release from prison.
  • ✠– provides legal and social services, food, clothing, and medical care to low-income families.
  • – works with program participants, previously homeless, to learn cooking skills and provide meals to DC’s hungry and homeless.
